When making an emergency kit for your vehicle, some items to include are:

- Map of the area, preferably with safety zones and evacuation routes marked from home, work and school
- Bottled water and non-perishable, high-energy foods such as granola bars, raisins or dried fruit and peanut butter
- A change of clothing, rain gear and sturdy shoes
- A battery or solar-powered radio, flashlight with extra bulb and plenty of extra batteries
- Gloves, dust masks and goggles
- Blanket or sleeping bag
- Tool kit for your vehicle
- First aid kit and manual
- Jumper cables, shovel and flares
- Fire extinguisher (5 lb., A-B-C type)
- Tire repair kit and pump. Also, periodically check the inflation of your spare tire.
- Personal medications
- Emergency phone numbers
If a volcanic eruption appears to be imminent, you should also carry the following in your car:

- Spare oil (4 to 5 quarts) and oil filter
- Spare windshield wiper blades and windshield washing fluid
